Personally being accused of something I didn't do always made me angry and I usually put a target on the back of the person who accused me. I never respected that person again. Being accused of rape however is a serious accusation and should never be taken likely. Unfortunately we live in an era where everybody wants to be famous and have their names on everybody's tongues. Accusing someone famous of rape like in that article you shared with us is absolutely disgusting. Being accused can turn public opinion on you and make you look like a disgusting human being when your not. The lady who accused this man has no self respect at all. Why try to ruin someone else's life just to have your name in the paper? This is why I think humans are just dumb, selfish animals who only have interest in themselves and money. Thats it.
Women are crazy. You mentioned in your post about this lady possibly doing it for the money. Well I know of a women who turned a families life upside down all for the money. My friends mother from back home chose money over three children. As of what I know right now they don't talk, but she has given her several chances and still has picked money over her kids. There are better ways to earn money than accusing someone falsely or just taking everything away from a once happy family. There just needs to be better people in the world, ones who are trustworthy and honorable. Not crazy people who do dumb things for their own selfish reasons with ought giving a damn who gets hurt in the process.

  1. Is putting yourself first so wrong? Doing this can be called self-preservation in a social battle of survival of the fittest. In order to thrive, sometimes you have to do what is best for yourself.
Obviously because of the different situation that humans in first-world countries find themselves in compared to other animals, the literal idea of survival of the fittest is a bit moot. The fittest are not necessarily the only ones that survive, as we look after less well-equipped people very well. You no longer have to be smart or athletic in order to survive, but you do have to be to thrive. The idea of Social Darwinism is much more appropriate to humans. Everyone wants to be at the top, or known by all. People will do whatever it takes to get there, and sometimes that decision can have negative affects on other people's lives, but hey, they are not as important as you. It is no longer about being alive for as long as you can; its about surviving past your expiration date in the minds of others.

  2. Your point reminds me of the one I was trying to make about men last week Hana--on the whole I feel that men in particular are predatory, but individual men can be wonderful.

In general, it is probably also true that people as such are selfish, as Mandeville would point out. And this comes out most intensely when we are simply trying to survive, as Brady points out, or trying to best the other person. It does seem that the state of nature continues in some form after civilization is established.

It seems like the process of civilization is also the process of conquering that element of us that leans toward the lowest common denominator. It's always incomplete, and people are always reverting back toward their worst selves, but that doesn't mean all hope is lost.
